Barford Barn weddings with Lucy and Matt

Lucy and Matt's wedding was just great - so much laughter and so relaxed.....I am doing my Blog posts a little bit differently now and getting the couple a bit more involved which will hopefully help future Brides with some advice, this coupled with the photographs will show you what a gorgeous day it was and also learn a bit more about Lucy and Matt...

  • How did you first meet and how did the proposal go?

We met at work, Matt was cheffing and I was waitressing. Matt took me to London to propose, we went to see The Lion King at the theatre and then went to the aquarium. I was looking at a turtle in the underwater tunnel and when I turned round, Matt was on one knee! Of course it was a yes straight away!

  • What did you think of the pre shoot and how did it go?

I thought that the pre shoot was such a brilliant idea, it was really fun and a great way to get used to being in front of the camera. It was a great way to get to know David, and vice versa, he really grasped our personalities and we had a real giggle during the pre shoot.

  • Where did you get the dress from, why did you choose it and what was it like? How many dresses did you try before you found this one?

I got the dress from Linda Gray Bridalwear in Gloucester. I got it over a year before the wedding, I wasn't even planning on dress shopping yet but one of my bridesmaids who lives in Australia was over so we all decided to go dress shopping. I tried a few on and wasn't too sure. Then my bridesmaid found "the dress" and suggested I try it on.....I loved it!

  • Why did you choose the wedding locations and the wedding Venue?

We got married at All Saints Church in Martin as it is where my parents, sister and uncle were married and my nieces, sister and I were christened. We knew that we wanted to put our own stamp on the reception venue so looked for somewhere that was a blank canvas where we could hire in our own caterers, bar, etc. Barford Park was perfect for that.

  • Who did your make up and any advice on this?

My friend Nicole did our makeup and was brilliant. She was so relaxed and really listened to what we wanted.

  • Who did you use for the catering?

We used Elite Mobile Event Bars for both the bar and catering. We had a big BBQ which was amazing!

  • who did the flowers?

Shirley Snells provided the flowers, they were great!

  • When planning your wedding, did you have any help or did you do it mostly yourselves? What were the most important aspects for you (eg. the photographer, the food, the decor…)?

We did it all ourselves, we had an idea in our head of what we wanted and managed to create it. With Matt being a chef, the food was an important part of the day. And the music! We had Grace Gillan and Jake Miller playing during the day and then a band called Revelry from London for the evening. We also knew we wanted a photographer who would capture who we are, and after a lot of searching, found David, who was perfect!

  • What was your wedding inspiration?

We wanted a wedding that reflected our personalities, so a chilled barn wedding was perfect. We live by the coast so Matt made all the centrepieces himself and all the name places out of driftwood that he had collected from the beach.

  • Bride: What advice would you give to future brides for their wedding day?

My advice to future brides would be to keep a sense of humour about everything. Our car broke down at the church and then again at the venue, and it made the day! It killed any nerves that I had and just made me giggle....and then I didn't stop laughing for the rest of the day! Try and keep calm in the morning and then take 5 minutes out during the ceremony to take it all in!

  • Groom: What advice would you give to future grooms for their wedding day?

Wear comfortable socks and pants! You will spend the entire day on your feet and the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable! Keep a sense of humour and remember that any dramas that may happen during the day with vendors and suppliers, none of your guests know any of these problems so relax and take it in your stride!

  • What’s your top tip for saving money?

We did a lot of the wedding ourselves, making centrepieces and decorations. Shop around for different options, snap up any deals that you find!

  • and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

We are glad that we did not scrimp on the photographer and the bands, as these were so important to us.

  • Any other advice for future couples out there?

It's your day, and all these people have come to celebrate with you! Don't put all the pressure on yourselves, let others help as they really want to and it stops all the stress being on you. Take 5 minutes out with your partner to have a chat, it goes so quickly, it's important to take it all in! And don't get too drunk!
